Description:
2017 has been a complicated year for Japanese politics. Alleged scandals involving Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his party the LDP (Liberal Democratic Party) has negatively affected their popularity among the Japanese public, ultimately threating their position as a ruling party. However, North Korea’s missile launches over Japan has subsequently helped Abe retain his position. After calling for a snap election, Abe regained popularity and retained his office. What could Mr. Abe’s new plans for Japan’s constitution regarding Japan’s military policy mean for U.S.-Japan relations? How will President Donald Trump’s meeting with Prime Minister Abe be beneficial to the future U.S.-Japan alliance? Join the Organization of Asian Studies as we discuss contemporary Japanese politics in lieu of North Korea and its relation to the U.S.-Japan Alliance with an esteemed panel of experts.
