Hi Sigur Center :)

This is Selina! I'm currently in Seoul, South Korea studying in the Korean Immersion Program at Sogang University. I'll be continuing my studies at Korea University this fall. I hope to continue to update all the Asia on E Street readers throughout the summer and fall semester.

SPIRI Research Internship

SIPRI North America is a branch office of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. SIPRI North America is non-profit organization located in Washington, D.C. The organization seeks to increase transatlantic and global interaction on vital public policy 
issues regarding conflict and cooperation and peace and security; and to promote peaceful solutions to international conflicts through the study of conditions necessary to sustain peace.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree (or degree in progress) in International Relations, Political Science, Conflict Resolution, or 
related field 
• Ability to intern 20 hrs/week. Minimum five months commitment. 
• Proficiency with MS Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel 
• Excellent internet research and documentation skills 
• Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills in English 
• Demonstrated knowledge and interest in peace and conflict and/or international relations

Duties and Responsibilities

• Research topics include women, war, and peace; Central Asia regional security challenges; and arms control and nonproliferation 
• Report to the Program Manager 
• Assist with coordinating SIPRI North America events 
• Closely work with the Resident Fellow to code multilateral and bilateral negotiations 
• Track grant opportunities 
• Update contact databases 
• Monitor global newsfeeds 
• Attend relevant events in Washington DC on behalf of SIPRI North America 
• Some data entry and administrative duties 
• Responsible for SIPRI North America social media (Twitter and Facebook) 
• Other related duties as assigned.

The start date for this internship is late April/early May.

The Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project (DVRP) is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1995 in response to the lack of linguistically and culturally appropriate services for Asian/Pacific Islander (A/PI)survivors of domestic violence in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. DVRP's mission is to address and prevent domestic violence in A/PI communities in the DC area. We believe in providing culturally appropriate tools, support, and resources for survivors to make their own life choices. DVRP is a non-hierarchical organization structured around mutual respect, shared responsibility, trust and equality, and supported by a collaborative style of leadership.

Description of Internship

 Do you want to be an influential voice in your community? Are you interested in raising awareness about domestic violence? DVRP is currently searching for a summer intern for the Community Outreach Program and the Training &Technical Assistance Program. The Outreach and Training intern will report to the Interim Executive Director. The Community Outreach Program is devoted to increasing awareness about the dynamics and impact of domestic violence in A/PI communities. DVRP’s Training& Technical Assistance Program works with service providers to ensure the provision of culturally competent services to A/PI survivors. Tasks include:

·        - Write and update content for DVRP’s website and social media platforms(Facebook, Twitter)

·        - Support DVRP’s Community Ambassadors in providing trainings and planning events

·        - Attend workshops and coalition meetings to address issues affecting the A/PI community

·        - Oversee the production, translation and distribution of materials about domestic violence at A/PI and domestic violence organizations

·         - Draft and send e-mails to DVRP’s supporters and donors

·         - Prepare bi-weekly newsletter and organizational updates

·         - Update training and donor databases on a regular basis

·        -  Assist with grant-seeking research and writing

·         - Other related duties in the daily operations of the organization, as assigned

Advocates Program

Recognizing that A/PI survivors of domestic violence have a variety of needs in order to attain safety for themselves and their children, the DVRP Advocates Program provides direct assistance on an individual level, with special consideration for cultural and linguistic needs. Tasks include:

·         Conducting intakes and providing referral information to survivors

·         Assisting with curriculum and program development for DVRP’s survivor workshops

·         Administering evaluation surveys

·         Coordinating and locating resources for Advocates Training

·         Recruiting and assisting with the training agenda for the Advocates Training

·         Updating organizational information and resource lists for the Advocates Program

·         Help plan and attend Advocates meetings (one Saturday every month)

·         Other relevant duties, as assigned

Taiwan-United States Sister Relations Alliance (TUSA) ‘Ambassador’ Scholarships

The Taiwan-United States Sister Relations Alliance (TUSA) is pleased to announce that ‘Ambassador’ Scholarships are again being offered to U.S. college students during the summer of 2013.

There is no requirement for proficiency in Chinese language... indeed, the program's aim is to provide opportunities to those who have not experienced a study-aboard program either in China or Taiwan, but are eager to pursue some overseas immersion Mandarin and cultural study. Other requirements include full-time student status, minimum 3.0 GPA, and two letters of recommendation from college professors. Accepted students will be enrolled in the Chinese Language Center at the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU,http://www.ncku.edu.tw  ) in Tainan City, Taiwan. The University is recognized as one of the two top institutions of higher education in Taiwan. The application period ends on Feb. 15, 2013 for early acceptance  and  March 31, 2013 for  general acceptance. Applications can be submitted on line at www.taiwanusalliance.com .

The 2013 TUSA program starts July 1 and ends August 23th.  A stipend of NT $25,000 (US $800) per month for two months (July & August) will be awarded to each scholarship recipient. The scholarship is budgeted to cover tuition, dormitory fees, all program-related travel and excursions, and accident/outpatient health insurance. The program is sponsored by  the  Ministry of Education  in Taiwan,  and a total of 36 ‘Ambassador’ students will be accepted for the 2013 class.                                                                          .

Congressional-Executive Commission on China Summer 2013 Internship Announcement

The Congressional-Executive Commission on China (www.cecc.gov) is offering paid internships to qualified undergraduates, graduate students, or recent graduates this coming summer in Washington, D.C. Interns must be U.S. citizens. The application deadline is March 1, 2013 for the Summer 2013 internship that runs from June to August 2013. Summer internships are full-time; interns are expected to work from 32 to 40 hours per week. See application instructions below.

CECC internships provide significant educational and professional experience for undergraduates, graduate students, or recent graduates with a background in Chinese politics, law, and society, and strong Chinese language skills.

Interns work closely with the Commission and its staff on the full array of issues concerning human rights, the rule of law, and governance in China (including criminal justice, democratic governance institutions, environmental problems, religious freedom, freedom of expression, ethnic minority rights, women's rights, etc.).

Interns perform important research support tasks (often in Chinese), attend seminars, meet Members of Congress and experts from the United States and abroad, and draft Commission analyses. Interns may also be trained to work with the Commission's Political Prisoner Database, which has been accessible by the public since its launch in November 2004 (click here to begin a search).

The CECC staff is committed to interns’ professional development, and holds regular roundtables for interns on important China-related issues.

Qualifications

•   Interns must be U.S. citizens.

•   Interns should have completed at least some China-related coursework. It is also desirable that they have some background in one or more of the specific human rights and rule of law issues in the CECC legislative mandate.

•    Interns should be able to read Chinese well enough to assist with research in newspapers, journals, and on Web sites. More advanced Chinese language capability would be a plus. The successful candidate for an internship often will have lived or studied in mainland China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan.

•    Although our interns are generally undergraduates, graduate students, or recent graduates, others are also welcome to apply.

The School of Pacific and Asian Studies (SPAS) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM) seeks papers, performances, and panel proposals for its 24th annual graduate student conference. The conference will be held on the UHM campus in Honolulu, HI on April 3-5, 2013. The theme this year is “CONTINUITY, CHANGE, AND CONTESTATION: MULTIDISCIPLINARY AND TRANSNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES ON THE ASIA-PACIFIC.”

In particular, we are looking for papers that:

Incorporate multidisciplinary approaches

Challenge approaches based on a national or regional focus

Engage new and emerging trends in Pacific and/or Asian Studies

Involve any original research on Asia and/or the Pacific

Present Asian and/or Pacific performance practices

As this year's theme indicates, we are interested in accepting papers, performances, and panel proposals that continue, change, and/or contest disciplinary and regional approaches to the study of the Asia/Pacific. With this goal in mind, we also encourage those with a background in the arts to apply with performance proposals. 

We are happy to announce that we have two keynote speakers joining us this year: Dr. Naoki Sakai (Cornell University) and Dr. Barbara Andaya (University of Hawai'i at Mānoa). Information about our keynotes can be found on our website.
