American Councils Taiwan Programs

American Councils for International Education is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for its summer 2018 study abroad offerings in Taiwan. With an 8-week intensive language program in Tainan and a new 4-week area studies program in Taipei, we look forward to welcoming students of all academic backgrounds and language levels to Taiwan next summer. Scholarship funding and U.S. academic credit is available to participants on both programs:

Host: National Cheng Kung University – Tainan, Taiwan
Dates: June 21 – August 18, 2018
Eligibility: Students 18 and over with 1-3 years of university-level Chinese by summer 2018
Program Features:
·         20 hours per week of small-group and individualized one-on-one Chinese instruction
·         Local student conversation partners
·         Hands-on culture classes introducing students to topics such as calligraphy, Taiwanese cooking, and traditional medicine
·         Day trips and overnight excursions providing participants a deeper understanding of Taiwanese history and culture
·         Community service opportunities and a weekend homestay with a local host family allowing participants to apply their language skills in a variety of authentic contexts
·         Two semesters’ worth of Chinese language credit offered through Bryn Mawr College

Host: National Chengchi University – Taipei, Taiwan
Dates: July 14 – August 11, 2018
Eligibility: All students 18 and over (no Chinese language background required)
Program Features:
  • Coursework in Taiwanese culture, society, history, and politics taught in English by expert faculty
  • Daily Chinese language instruction (taught at the beginner and intermediate levels)
  • Hands-on culture classes introducing students to topics such as tai chi, calligraphy, and traditional handicrafts
  • Regular field trips allowing participants further meaningful engagement with course content 
  • Academic credit in sociology and political science offered through Bryn Mawr College

Financial Aid
Through the generous support of the Taiwan Ministry of Education, all U.S. students applying for AC Study Abroad scholarship funding for either program in Taiwan will automatically also be considered for additional scholarships of up to $2500, awarded based on financial need and academic merit.

Past program participants have successfully applied additional outside sources of financial aid, including Fund for Education Abroad ScholarshipsFreeman Awards for Study in Asia , and Gilman Scholarships  to further reduce their out-of-pocket costs.  

The deadline to apply for both programs is February 15, 2018.

Spotlight Program: Marlee Grant


This past July, GWU student Marlee Grant traveled to Taipei, Taiwan with Giselle Ruzany, a professor in the dance program at GWU, and one other dance major, Hana Springer. Thanks to a grant that funded an ESIA-TRDA crossover and collaboration, they participated in the World Stage Design Festival and worked closely with Anarchy Dance Theater and choreographer I-Fen Tung, who then came to DC on an exchange to choreograph a work with our dancers here at GWU. Now, Marlee is a Marketing Strategy and Content Intern at the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The Kennedy Center recently published an article on Marlee's internship experience, which can be viewed here.

Asian Studies Fellowship 2018 at the EWCW

This fellowship supports scholars and analysts who wish to undertake research and writing on topics of relevance to contemporary US-Asia policy; in particular, proposals regarding key challenges in U.S.-Asia relations and possible responses and approaches to addressing those challenges.

The fellowship finances residencies for a period of three months in Washington, D.C. at the East-West Center in Washington. Residencies may begin as early as March 2018 and extend through September 2018.

The fellowship includes a monthly stipend, round trip economy airfare to Washington, D.C. Fellows will complete articles or a monograph and must give a seminar on their research topic..

The deadline for applications is January 2, 2018

The Asia Group, LLC (TAG) is accepting applications for an associate/senior associate at our Washington, DC office. TAG is a strategic and business advisory firm that supports Fortune 500 corporations with market entry and expansion strategies and political risk analysis in the Asia-Pacific. TAG clients cover a broad range of industries including: aerospace and defense, autos, civil aviation, energy/extractives, financial services, ICT, pharmaceuticals, transportation, entertainment, and hospitality.

TAG is looking for highly motivated candidates with a significant experience and strong understanding of political dynamics, economic trends, and international relations across Asian markets. The associate/senior associate will report directly to the Director of Research, working to provide regular updates to clients and will be responsible for sourcing relevant research, providing analysis, and editing written products for content and style. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated professional experience on Asia and a proven track record as a writer.

Responsibilities include:

·   Draft daily updates for clients
·   Track emerging developments across Asia impacting client equities
·   Manage distribution of content to clients
·   Design information graphics

Required qualifications:

·   Outstanding writing and editing skills
·   Strong attention to detail and excel under tight deadlines
·   Two to five years professional experience with Asia – preferably in journalism or research
·   Proficiency in digital communication – including social media campaigns
·   Self-starter and ability to excel in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
·   Team player with eagerness for professional development

Desired focus and expertise:

·   Demonstrated analytical economic and political expertise in several Asia-Pacific markets
·   Graphic design experience is a plus
