The Congressional Research Service (CRS) seeks an Analyst in Asian Security Affairs to join its Foreign Affairs, Defense and Trade Division (FDT).

The Analyst in Asian Security Affairs will research and track a range of issues related to current security, political, economic, and regional conditions along with U.S. policy and strategy in Asia, and more specifically East Asia, for Members and committees of the U.S. Congress.

The analyst will conduct analyses that inform congressional deliberations on national security policy related to Asia on bilateral and multilateral bases. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in the history, political-military trends, and current status of national security challenges and conflicts in the Asian region. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an understanding (through published research or practical experience) of the causal relationships among these dynamics. Experience in military strategy, military capabilities, weapons proliferation, intelligence analysis, security cooperation, treaties and security agreements, as well as regional security frameworks would be a plus.

Strong research, writing and presentation skills are essential, including the ability to synthesize complex policy analyses into easy-to-understand language for a non-technical audience. Applicants should be adept at quantitative approaches to research.
Analyst Duties
  • conducting research and preparing objective, non-partisan analytical studies and descriptive background reports on issues of national significance
  • providing personal consultation and assistance to congressional committees, Members and staff on public policy issues throughout the legislative process
  • participating in team research projects and seminars
