Upcoming Event: Teach for China Information Session

Established in 2008, Teach For China is a non-profit organization that takes a unique approach to eliminating educational inequity in China by enlisting the US and China’s most promising future leaders in the effort. Teach For China trains Fellows, places them in teams at schools with demonstrated need, and provides continuous support so that Fellows have a solid platform on which to bring significant gains to their students.

Jessica Shyu, Teach For China's Director of National Teaching Excellence and Leadership, and former Fellows will gather to discuss their experiences working and teaching in China. From challenges and successes in the classroom to our ongoing training and support program, this panel discussion will cover a wide range of topics from a variety of perspectives.

Current undergraduate or graduate students; recent graduates are also eligible.  Must be 18 years of age.

Learning Enterprises (LE) is an organization that sends college-aged volunteers abroad to teach English during the summer. LE has programs in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Russia, China, Thailand, Ethiopia, Mauritius Island, Mexico, and Panama.

VIA has worked with schools and grassroots organizations in Asia for nearly 50 years to support education, community development, and cultural exchange. The current one-year program is designed to increase capacity at partner institutions while building volunteers’ professional and cultural competencies. Volunteers join a vibrant network of alumni who have distinguished themselves in the fields of education, international development, government, health, and business. The program has placements in Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Volunteer Opportunity: Rebalance to Asia, Refocus on Okinawa Conference on October 23rd



Volunteer Position:
Date: Tuesday, October 23rd
Time (tentative): 7am-1:30pm 
Place: A hotel in downtown Washington, D.C. (Near Metro Center Metro Station) 
Event Organizer: Washington CORE, LLC 
Background: 
The event organizer is seeking several graduate students to support an event on US-Japan alliance with 
a prominent key note speaker and panel, who are experts on the US-Japan relationship, China studies, 
and broader Asia and Pacific affairs. Invited audience includes experts from government agencies, 
congressional offices, think tanks, academia, and other related organizations, as well as media from the 
United States and Japan (see the next page for more details).
Expected Key Responsibilities: 
The volunteers will assist the organizer in various tasks including but not limited to: 
• Venue set up before the event 
• Helping with registration desk 
o Greeting and welcoming the audience 
o Signing attendants in and handing out materials 
• Other tasks as they arise

Rebalance to Asia, Refocus on Okinawa: Okinawa's Role in an Evolving US-Japan Alliance


Please join us for a panel discussion on evolving security dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region and Okinawa’s essential security contribution to the U.S.-Japan alliance as both countries develop strategic responses to China’s growing naval presence, North Korean provocations, and other potential flashpoints.

On October 23, the Okinawa Prefectural Government will sponsor a panel discussion on the U.S.-Japan alliance and a luncheon keynote address by Senator Jim Webb of Virginia. In the panel discussion,Governor Hirokazu Nakaima of Okinawa Prefecture will discuss security dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region with distinguished American and Japanese policy experts. The discussion will cover issues such as possible solutions to the current impasse over the Futenma relocation plan, security and cooperation in East Asia, and Okinawa’s future role in the U.S. rebalance to Asia. After the discussion, panelists will take audience questions.

Apply Today as a Volunteer for Machik's Summer Enrichment Program in Tibet!

Machik's Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to engage in Tibetan youth empowerment while working together with Tibetan, Chinese, and global volunteers. During the four weeks at SEP, volunteers will have the option to teach an elective class of their own design, or to draw on curriculum from past years for courses such as English, Health, of Social Entrepreneurship. Other past classes have included Tibetan language and history, participatory filmmaking, photo camp, music, incense making, economics, science, health and other activities. Please keep in mind that this is a program for those who want a challenge. You will be asked not only to explore a new place but also to learn at new levels by pushing yourself beyond your normal boundaries. Volunteers from all backgrounds are welcome to serve, learn, and build new bridges of understanding! SEP will take place from July 18-August 18, 2012 in Shangri-la, Yunnan province, PRC. The application deadline is March 2, but late applications may be accepted under special circumstances. Cost for US applicants is $2,000 USD (includes room and board, but not flights). VIA (formerly Volunteers in Asia) is a private, non-profit, non-religious organization dedicated to increasing understanding between the United States and Asia through service and education. Since 1963, Via has provided U.S. Residents with an opportunity to work and live within an Asian culture while meeting the needs of Asian host institutions. It currently offer long-term and summer programs in Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam of issues in education, environment, gender, health, anti-trafficking, and rural development.

The Sigur Center for Asian Studies is looking for 2-3 volunteers to help with set up and registration at our upcoming conference on Taiwan in a Shifting International Landscape from 9:30 - 12:30 on Thursday, December 8.

Call for Application: VOLUNTEER IN CHINA


Dream Corps, an innovative nonprofit
organization, is looking for international volunteers to participate
in its 2011 Summer Volunteer Program in rural villages and urban
migrant communities in China.

Dream Corps is recruiting about 65 international volunteers to
participate in its 2011 Summer Volunteer Program in underprivileged
rural schools (township elementary or middle schools) and villages of
China. Volunteers will take part in activities that include:
Establishing and developing libraries: decorations, cataloging books,
electronic cataloging system set-ups, and library policy making.
Reading programs: “Library Month”, “Reading Aloud”, “Science and
Reading”, EnglishReading, and crafts.
Understanding and learning from locals: communicating with the local
teachers, home visits, community research, and promoting reading in
the community.



The program consists of 4 days of training in Beijing, 3 weeks of
volunteer work on assigned volunteer sites, and 3 days concluding
forum in Beijing.

When: 2011 summer, May 19 – June 23

Deadline: February 20, 2011
