Announcement for Spring 2013 Internship Asian/ Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project
The Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project (DVRP) is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1995 in response to the lack of linguistically and culturally appropriate services for Asian/Pacific Islander (A/PI)survivors of domestic violence in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. DVRP's mission is to address and prevent domestic violence in A/PI communities in the DC area. We believe in providing culturally appropriate tools, support, and resources for survivors to make their own life choices. DVRP is a non-hierarchical organization structured around mutual respect, shared responsibility, trust and equality, and supported by a collaborative style of leadership.

Description of Internship
 Do you want to be an influential voice in your community? Are you interested in raising awareness about domestic violence? DVRP is currently searching for a summer intern for the Community Outreach Program and the Training &Technical Assistance Program. The Outreach and Training intern will report to the Interim Executive Director. The Community Outreach Program is devoted to increasing awareness about the dynamics and impact of domestic violence in A/PI communities. DVRP’s Training& Technical Assistance Program works with service providers to ensure the provision of culturally competent services to A/PI survivors. Tasks include:

·        - Write and update content for DVRP’s website and social media platforms(Facebook, Twitter)
·        - Support DVRP’s Community Ambassadors in providing trainings and planning events
·        - Attend workshops and coalition meetings to address issues affecting the A/PI community
·        - Oversee the production, translation and distribution of materials about domestic violence at A/PI and domestic violence organizations
·         - Draft and send e-mails to DVRP’s supporters and donors
·         - Prepare bi-weekly newsletter and organizational updates
·         - Update training and donor databases on a regular basis
·        -  Assist with grant-seeking research and writing
·         - Other related duties in the daily operations of the organization, as assigned

Note: This is an unpaid internship.


Time Commitment:
This internship begins in mid-late May 2013 until mid-August, although start dates can be somewhat flexible. Interns should have availability during DVRP’s business hours (Mondays-Fridays 10am-6pm). Interns are required to commit to at least 20-25 hours per week.

Advocates Program
Recognizing that A/PI survivors of domestic violence have a variety of needs in order to attain safety for themselves and their children, the DVRP Advocates Program provides direct assistance on an individual level, with special consideration for cultural and linguistic needs. Tasks include:
·         Conducting intakes and providing referral information to survivors
·         Assisting with curriculum and program development for DVRP’s survivor workshops
·         Administering evaluation surveys
·         Coordinating and locating resources for Advocates Training
·         Recruiting and assisting with the training agenda for the Advocates Training
·         Updating organizational information and resource lists for the Advocates Program
·         Help plan and attend Advocates meetings (one Saturday every month)
·         Other relevant duties, as assigned

Note: This is an unpaid internship.

Southeast Asian Alliance

The mission of SEAA is to promote cultural awareness of Southeast Asian countries and foster a solid relationship among students from the region and worldwide. The aim of the club is not to limit the club to only to GWU, but to develop presence of Southeast Asian culture here on campus and then expand to other schools by encouraging their students to open chapters there. Then SEAA will provide them with the sufficient resources they need. 

Positions available on the SEAA Executive Board include SECRETARY, TREASURER, PUBLIC RELATIONS DIRECTOR/ASA REPRESENTATIVE, MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR, HISTORIAN/WEBMASTER (2 positions available). The application DEADLINE is MARCH 31ST.

The Congressional-Executive Commission on China is a bipartisan commission created by Congress in 2000 to monitor and report on human rights and rule of law developments in China. The Commission consists of Senators, Members of the House of Representatives, and senior officials from the Administration. Main duties:

• Develop and implement a strategy for increasing accessibility to Commission work products, including newsletters, political prisoner records, special reports, and the Annual Report.
• Increase media coverage and raise awareness on the Hill and to the general public regarding the Commission's work.
• Maintain the Commission's new Web site and social media sites (Twitter, Facebook).
• Draft, edit, and distribute Commission statements, press releases, newsletters, new media content, and event announcements.
• Develop, plan, and provide logistical support for Commission events, including hearings, roundtables, and briefings.
• Monitor, track, and assess the effectiveness of the Commission's outreach efforts.

Qualifications:
• Candidates must be a U.S. citizen.
• Candidates will have a B.A. with relevant work experience.
• Some background in layout and design (including for Web sites and publications) is desirable.
• Ability to speak and read Chinese is preferable.

The Commission is seeking professional staff members to assist in monitoring and reporting on substantive issues pertaining to the freedom of religion and criminal justice portfolios. The professional staff member will assist in assessing China's compliance or noncompliance with international human rights standards and Chinese domestic law. Successful candidates should have substantive background and/or an interest in one or more of these issue areas. Successful candidates should also possess the necessary Chinese language, English writing, and communication skills to effectively research, analyze, and explain such developments to U.S. policymakers and the broader public.

Main duties:
• Monitoring and researching Chinese and English language sources (media, government, NGO) for developments relating to their issue area.
• Identifying and analyzing key developments and reporting their significance orally and in writing, including through drafting sections of the Commission's Annual Reports, short analysis pieces, public statements, and press releases.
• Researching political prisoner cases and creating and maintaining case records in the CECC Political Prisoner Database.
• Assisting in organizing CECC public hearings and roundtables.
• Staff member also may be asked to travel to U.S. cities, China, or other foreign locations on official business.

Qualifications:
• Candidates must be a U.S. citizen.
• Very strong demonstrated ability to speak, read, write, and perform research in Chinese (Mandarin) is required.
• The successful candidate will likely have worked or studied in mainland China, Taiwan, or Hong Kong.
• Candidates will preferably have a law degree or a Ph.D. or M.A. in political science, history, business, economics, or other social sciences. B.A. candidates with very strong credentials will also be considered.
• Strong oral and written communication skills, and the interpersonal skills and enthusiasm to work under tight deadlines and as part of a team.
