ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK INTERNSHIP

ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK INTERNSHIP, WASHINGTON, D.C.

Deadline for Application:  19-Feb-2013 5:00 PM Manila Time

Position Title:  Intern NARO - 1319

Location:  Washington DC,US

Department:  Strategy and Policy Department

Division:  North American Representative Office

Internship Topic: Development Communications

Summary of Job Description

The Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) North American Representative Office (NARO) is seeking applicants to participate in a development communications internship at ADB’s office in Washington, D.C. on a part-time basis starting in Spring 2013.

Development Communications is an important tool for IFIs like ADB to connect with donors, governments, private sector, researchers and other stake holders. For ADB’s North American Representative Office (NARO), this form of communications entails engaging with the U.S. government, Congress, think tanks, universities, diplomatic corps, and members of the media.

While communicating to stakeholders takes a traditional role through educating, informing, and engaging key influencers, the function of development communications has evolved from one-way communications (i.e., electronic communications, website posting) to two-way interaction that elicits the feedback of stakeholders on issues important to an organization like ADB (ie., the use of social media that encourages response and discussion).  As ADB NARO expands its outreach activities through the United States and Canada, it will be important to examine two-way development communications best practices and determine how this medium is used to reach out to stakeholders.

With the help of ADB NARO staff, the prospective ADB intern will examine development communications best practices industry wide, including other IFIs, international organizations, private sector, government agencies, NGOs and civil society in an effort to create recommendations for ADB NARO to pursue in engaging stakeholders.

Scope of Work

The intern will work closely and collaboratively with ADB NARO staff including the Resident Director General, Deputy Representative and External Relations Officer.

The intern will:

·        Research on development communications best practices.
·        Assist with outreach for government, Congressional and academic events and briefings.
·        Attend events and briefings at think tank organizations, universities, congressional hearings and government agencies and write event summaries for NARO staff.
·        Assist with media outreach including editing press releases and updating the media database.
·        Assist the External Relations Officer in disseminating news alerts to stakeholders on issues pertaining to ADB’s sector and thematic work.
·        Work closely with NARO staff in planning and implementing special projects or programs.
·        Assist with other tasks and projects as needed, such as office coverage (i.e. phone coverage, data entry, etc.), providing administrative and logistical support for visiting ADB missions (i.e. setting up appointments, preparation of briefing books, etc.), and contributing to the preparation of a quarterly report.

Expected Outcomes

·        Complete a research paper at the end of the internship.
·        Present the report formally to ADB staff in the Washington, D.C. office and to staff in ADB Headquarters in Manila, Philippines via video conferencing.

Education Requirements

   Candidates must:

·        be enrolled in a Master’s- or PhD-level program, at a school in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, both prior to and after the internship assignment; and
·        be engaged in academic study in a field directly related to ADB's work (preference will be given to graduate students majoring in international relations, development studies, economics, political science, communications or fields related to the scope of the internship).

Relevant Experience

·        Should have relevant professional experience.
·        Should demonstrate research and writing skills, and knowledge of Microsoft office applications.
·        Must be familiar with social media tools.
·        Must possess an excellent command of English.

Core Competencies

   Candidates must be able to:

·        exhibit professionalism in the conduct of his/her project tasks.
·        analyze data and recommend solutions.
·        be self-directed.
·        build professional relationships to achieve results.
