STEM Chinese Language Learning for Summer 2012

China-STEM (Chinese for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Medicine) opens this summer at Hopkins Nanjing Center with two tracks: engineering and health science. The summer program is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and researchers who seek to enhance their Chinese language proficiency for scientific, technological, engineering, and medical (STEM) disciplines. Over the course of eight weeks, students are immersed in rigorous language training, coupled with experiential research trips to laboratories, hospitals, and academic institutions in Nanjing and Beijing. Students with 3 years of college level Chinese or equivalent who are interested in developing specialized language skills for careers in medicine, public health, nursing, or engineering should check out and apply through their site.

Exciting Volunteer Opportunity: U.S.-Japan-South Korea Legislative Exchange Program

The U.S.-Japan-South Korea Legislative Exchange Program (LEP/TLEP) is looking for eight student volunteers, preferably with Japanese and/or Korean language skills, to help organize and staff a trilateral summit between legislators from the three countries from May 8-10 on Capitol Hill. Responsibilities include contacting members of Congress, preparing meeting materials, and escorting Japanese and South Korean parliamentarians to and from program events. Students will have the opportunity to attend meeting sessions and meals with participants. Training will take place the week of March 19. Work schedules are flexible, but volunteers must be available to devote 6 hours per week beginning in late March and must be able to help staff the meetings. Qualifications

* Excellent command of English language

Elliot School Launches New Exchange Program with Singapore's Nanyang Technological University, Home of the S. Rajaratnam School of Intl. Studies

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is one of the most prestigious academic institutions in Asia. The NTU S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) was established in 2006 as an autonomous graduate institution of NTU, with the renowned Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies as a key component.


RSIS is a community of scholars and policy analysts at the forefront of Asia-Pacific security studies and international affairs. Its three core functions are research, graduate teaching and networking activities in the Asia-Pacific region. It produces cutting-edge security related research in Asia-Pacific Security, Conflict and Non-Traditional Security, International Political Economy, and Country and Area Studies. RSIS offers coursework in International Relations, International Political Economy, Asian Studies, and Strategic Studies.

The Program Coordinator plays an integral role in the programming of the Sigur Center for Asian Studies. The incumbent oversees the Center’s 60+ annual events in addition to playing a critical role in the Center’s communications and outreach effort. This includes website management, social networking, publications, and reports. This position also coordinates the Center’s Visiting Scholars Program which includes working with Scholars and GW’s International Service Office to procure necessary visas and other paperwork. The incumbent must be self-motivated, take initiative, and be proactive to be successful in this highly independent position.

The Taiwan-United States Sister Relations Alliance announces that the TUSA 2012 Ambassador Summer Scholarship Program is being offered to college and university students interested in studying the Mandarin Chinese language in Taiwan during the months of July and August 2012.

The Ambassador Summer Scholarship Program is a full scholarship program funded by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan. The 2012 Program will be conducted at National Cheng Kung University. The scholarship covers tuition, dormitory fees, four excursions and incidental insurance. Meals are not included. Students must provide their own airfare to and from Taiwan.

This unique opportunity provides a quality Mandarin Chinese immersion program with emphasis on speaking and simultaneous focus on all other areas of the language—listening, reading and writing. In addition to studying at a fabulous university, students learn about Taiwanese culture. Visiting several interesting areas of Taiwan to become more familiar with Taiwan and her people is also included in the TUSA Program. Prior knowledge or experience with the Mandarin language is not required. Each U.S. student is paired with a Taiwanese study partner to assist in the study program.

Application period is 1 January 2012 to 31 March 2012. Completed applications received prior to 15 February 2012 will be reviewed for early acceptance and reported to the applicant within seven days of that date. All remaining applications, including those not awarded early admission, will be reviewed and reported by 7 April 2012.

U.S. Department of State's Foreign Policy Classroom

Beginning January 2012, the Classroom will be in session year-round for all students and faculty members interested in elevating their knowledge of foreign policy priorities to a more scholarly status. This Thursday, February 23, from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., Jonathan Adams, India Desk Officer, and Mitul Desai, Senior Advisor, from the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, will be speaking on “India’s Rise.”


Jonathan Adams is an India desk officer working on political issues in the U.S. Department of State’s South & Central Asian Bureau. Before joining the State Department a year ago, Jonathan was a Taiwan-based journalist covering East Asia politics, economics and culture for Newsweek, the International Herald Tribune, the Christian Science Monitor and other publications. He has also done communications work for nonprofit groups in Maine and New York City. He holds a masters degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.

Mitul Desai is Senior Advisor in the U.S. Department of State’s South & Central Asian Bureau, where he engages private sector, NGO, and Diaspora organizations to build partnerships around a variety of issues impacting the region, including philanthropy and entrepreneurship. Mitul comes to government from the corporate arena, where he worked as an investment bank analyst, entrepreneur, and intellectual property attorney. His experience includes several years at Merck & Co. and Piper Jaffray & Co. He received his J.D. from the Boston University School of Law.

Part-Time Internship at the Project 2049 Institute

The Project 2049 Institute is a non-partisan security policy think tank specializing on the Asia-Pacific region. The Institute seeks to guide decision makers toward a more secure Asia by the century’s mid-point. The organization fills a gap in the public policy realm through forward-looking, region-specific research on alternative security and policy solutions. Its interdisciplinary approach draws on rigorous analysis of socioeconomic, governance, military, environmental, technological and political trends, and input from key players in the region, with an eye toward educating the public and informing policy debate.

We are looking to take on a part-time intern for the remainder of the Spring Semester. This opportunity is ideal for students interested in gaining research experience in Asia security issues. Intern responsibilities include research assistance, contributing to our blog AsiaEye, event planning and administrative support. Hours are flexible, but applicants should be able to commit to at least 15-20 hours per week. A monthly stipend commensurate with time commitment will be provided.

Apply Today as a Volunteer for Machik's Summer Enrichment Program in Tibet!

Machik's Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to engage in Tibetan youth empowerment while working together with Tibetan, Chinese, and global volunteers. During the four weeks at SEP, volunteers will have the option to teach an elective class of their own design, or to draw on curriculum from past years for courses such as English, Health, of Social Entrepreneurship. Other past classes have included Tibetan language and history, participatory filmmaking, photo camp, music, incense making, economics, science, health and other activities. Please keep in mind that this is a program for those who want a challenge. You will be asked not only to explore a new place but also to learn at new levels by pushing yourself beyond your normal boundaries. Volunteers from all backgrounds are welcome to serve, learn, and build new bridges of understanding! SEP will take place from July 18-August 18, 2012 in Shangri-la, Yunnan province, PRC. Applications for the Woodenfish Project's China and Taiwan Buddhism Immersion Programs Now Open!

Sponsored by Fo Guang Shan Monastery, the Woodenfish project aims to advance Humanistic Buddhism through a series of projects geared toward young adults. Woodenfish works with them to promote a spiritual, academic, and socially relevant understanding of Buddhism.

The Woodenfish Project is currently offering two programs for undergrdaute and gradaute students:

Woodenfish Taiwan: HBMLP
The Humanistic Buddhism Monastic Life Program (HBMLP) is a month-long program for students and young adults at Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Taiwan. Participants live as monastics while taking academic classes on Buddhism and participating in traditional practices. The program welcomes participants from all countries, faiths and academic fields.

Woodenfish China: Buddhism in China series
Through the "Buddhism in China" series, the Woodenfish Project aims to aid the development of young scholars in the West with research interests in Chinese Buddhism and related fields by offering them the opportunity for direct, intensive academic engagement with the major historical centers of Buddhism in China.

Call for Sumission!

The Columbia East Asia Review (CEAR) is a multidisciplinary undergraduate journal of East and Southeast Asian Studies based at Columbia University. CEAR is dedicated to publishing superior undergraduate research on East and Southeast Asia while offering students the opportunity to learn about academic publishing and the peer-review process firsthand. Print and online editions are published annually in April and reach a readership that extends top universities across the United States, Europe, and Asia.


CEAR is currently accepting submissions in any discipline from undergraduate students worldwide. The deadline for submissions is February 12, 2012 but earlier submissions are welcomed.


Submissions must be written by an undergraduate or recent graduate (having graduated within one year from an undergraduate institution), exhibit original research, and relate directly to one or more regions of East or Southeast Asia.

Aspen India Summer Fellowship Now Available!

Aspen Institute India is delighted to announce the "Aspen India" - Avantha International Fellowship 2012” for the second year. It is looking for two motivated international students to come to Delhi during the summer of 2012.


Candidates should ideally be from the field of International Relations/ International Development Studies/ South Asian Studies, who want to gain broad knowledge of the world of philanthropy, social reform and development in India. Students pursuing Masters program are preferred, though applications from seniors in a Bachelors program may also be considered.


As “Fellows” the two selected candidates will learn about the social, political and economic issues facing the world’s largest democracy. In addition to international exposure and leadership experience, Fellows will gain firsthand experience on these issues, and learn from the best practices and expert minds in the field. You will also have the opportunity to actively support Aspen India in their ongoing leadership programs, outreach seminars, workshops, conferences, and other related events where applicable.


This would be two month program; the dates would be flexible and based on international university schedule.
